NEW ENTRANTS

LEARNING THE ALPHABET

When learning the alphabet the emphasis is on recognising the letter names and sounds.  We learn both Upper and Lower case letter and examples of words that start with the letter.

The children will work through a ten week programme called Jolly Phonics where they learn letter sounds.  Names and combined letter sounds.  Handwriting is also based around this.  Children will have a new sound four days a week and will have a Phonics book to bring home to go over the new sounds and revise the old.

Some children may take some months to learn these letters and their sounds.  A good start is with their name and its letters.

Just relax and remember to give lots of praise!

HANDY HINTS YOU MIGHT FIND HELPFUL

If possible, have your enrolment papers into the office before your child’s pre-school entry dates.

If you are intending to buy a bag for school, ensure that it is large enough to take a drink bottle, a lunch box,  a reading folder,  library books, jersey (jacket / swimming togs in season).

Children settle in better in the mornings if they are early enough to unpack themselves and have a little play.  The buzzer is sounded at 8:55am.

Please telephone the school in the morning if your child is going to be absent.

It is a great help if the children are able to:

  • Recognise their own name.
  • Able to manage pencils, crayons scissors.
  • Manage their own clothes and belongings.
  • Manage the toilet unassisted – boys – urinal.
  • Be able to sit and listen.
  • Be able to follow simple instructions and directions (i.e. do what they are asked!).
