kiwi 3 / Discovery

This week in Kiwi 3 for discovery time the kids were learning how to be a confident learner. They made play dough sculptures by themselves to prove that they could work on their own. They made lots of different species of art from unicorns to people. Here are some of the kids amazing play dough sculptures.

Tui 4

This week in discovery time for Tui 4 they made clay sculptures. Janice decided to make a go cart with a person inside the cart, she thinks the reason they are doing this is because it is fun and takes up a good amount of time in the classroom. The clay was brown coloured and Mrs Rush had given them some help by saying keep your clay nice and thick so that it won't fall apart. Tui 4 did a great job good work guys.

Kiwi 1 and Kea Folk Dancing

In Kiwi one the students have been learning  the difference between left and right.  To help them do this they have learnt folk dancing. Kiwi 1 came over to Kea to teach them what they have learnt and dance together.

Tui 9

Kiwi 9, participated in a warehouse stationery sponsored event called #GetNZWriting2018 which is a activity where two classrooms from different parts of the country, come together, and tell facts about each other. Things like, how many siblings people have is their families, and what their favorite colors were.
Tui 9 co-operated with room 5 from Pekerau school in Te Awamutu.
I’m not sure if they have the answers from room 5, but I’m certainly looking forward to see them!
They’ll also say some of them at assembly today.
They’ll be presenting them at assembly today, so I got a sneak peek at what they’ll be presenting. They had to write a letter to their buddy classroom using metaphors about them. They’ll also say some of them at assembly today.

kiwi 5

In Kiwi five this week the children have been working hard and making hosanna hands. To make the hand shape they drew round their own hands to get the perfect stencil. Once they had made the stencil they cut the hand out from the piece of paper. After that they got some glue and put them on another piece of paper, that said hosanna they colored in the page and made it look nice. Good work Kiwi five.

PYDT year 8 Leaders day

On Wednesday, the 7th of March, St Joseph’s year 8’s traveled to Christchurch to headed to  PYDT ( Papanui Youth Development Trust ) to experience the year 8 leader’s day.

The activities were things like: Rock climbing, Blind Freddie, Link walking activity, andc a very fun rope activity. The people who run the place gave us a tour, and they had a recording studio, a ping pong table and a radio room where they recorded a radio show.

Then all of the year 8’s divided into two groups, and went to two different activities. The first group went to rock climbing and the others went to an interesting activity.

They second group all joined a line, the person at one end was blindfolded and they people linked beside said person had to guide them around an obstacle course, we had to go under tables, and over a range of things like a very unstable piece of wood. It was very funny to see the leader stumble around while everyone was shouting to go in the right direction.

After the groups switched, the second group went to rock climbing, there were a range of walls to climb and they ranked in difficulty.

Then it was lunch, it was extra fun because a special school came in and we would converse with them the groups of year 8’s broke up into 5 people and we each had 2 people from the school, my group had someone with down syndrome and the other had autism, they were really funny and Elliot always said “owww” really loud when we told him about us falling over while bowling or such. And Daniel talked with an Ipad and we learnt that we had a dog called Nella and his favourite movie was “ The good dinosaur”

Finally we took a class about synergy, synergy means that someone on their own cant do nearly as much as when they are collaborating with someone. ( did you know a singly Oxen can pull 300 kgs, but if two Oxen pull something together they can pull over 12000 kg’s!! ) So after that lecture, the people took us outside and we tried to stand up in unison while all holding hands or connecting some other way. Then all of the year 8’s stood in a circle and all held onto a rope. We all leant back and the man talked to us about if any of us give up the tension in the rope would loosen and we would all fall over. So after that we were determined to move on and try let someone walk along the rope. It was all fun and games before Layton walked along the rope and we all were struggling, but we managed to pull through. People really enjoyed that activity.

Finally we had a final lecture and learnt about our personality types, mine was an otter, a carefree and happy person. And we made play-doh sculptures about them.

Overall it was a very fun and eventful day. It was really fun because everyone was really determined to do well on the day. It was a long day with fun activities!

Kiwi One

In Kiwi 1 this week they have been learning about the letter D and what sounds it makes. They decided to make a "dragon" using finger painting. The children had a template of a dragons head and used their fingers  and paint to make the scales. First they had  to cut out their dragons face and then they had to glue the eyes, the wings and the fire on the dragon's face. When they were done they looked really cool, all the students enjoyed making them!
